On Tuesday, the United States announced sanctions on an armed group linked to the Congolese military, a mining company in Congo, and two exporters from Hong Kong, due to armed conflict and the trade of critical minerals. These measures are the latest attempts by President Donald Trump's administration to bring peace to eastern Congo, an area that experienced a swift offensive by M23 rebels backed by Rwanda earlier this year, leading to violence that has resulted in thousands of deaths.
