President Trump’s "big, beautiful bill," which he signed last month, is expected to lead to 2.4 million people — including families with children — losing their food stamp benefits, according to an analysis by the Congressional Budget Office. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, has traditionally required certain able-bodied adults to work in order to receive benefits for more than three months. However, for the first time, parents of dependent children over the age of 14 will need to work, volunteer, or participate in job training for at least 80 hours each month to qualify for their benefits. Additionally, the law requires adults aged 55 to 64, veterans, individuals experiencing homelessness, and former foster care youth to meet this requirement. The CBO also noted that other recipients are expected to see a reduction in their monthly assistance.
