Covid-19 cases are increasing in the US, with transmission rates climbing in at least 45 states. However, individuals seeking vaccination this fall may encounter more challenges. Recently, the CDC informed state and local officials that the FDA might not renew the authorization for Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine for children under 5. This age group is particularly susceptible to severe illness from Covid-19. Without this authorization, Pfizer’s vaccine would not be available for those under 5. Moderna’s Covid-19 vaccine, the alternative for healthy children without underlying conditions in this age bracket, would need to be administered "off label" by a willing pharmacist or doctor. In May, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. declared that the CDC would cease recommending Covid-19 vaccines for healthy children or pregnant women. For other adults, the FDA has yet to approve the formulation for either the Covid-19 or flu vaccines for the 2025-2026 season.
